Campaigners plan legal challenge to proposed sale by council of care homes
Law firm Irwin Mitchell has been instructed by campaigners opposed to Kirklees Council’s plan to sell two care homes to the private sector.

Those affected are Claremont House and Castle Grange, the council’s last two long-stay dementia care homes.
Objectors argue the council claimed to have made the decision on a financial basis, but there was a lack of evidence to support this.
Rebecca Chapman, the lawyer leading the case, said: “We’ve heard first-hand accounts from families who say the decision will have a significant impact on their loved ones.
‘We previously wrote to Kirklees Council to this effect, but privatisation is still set to go ahead. We’ve therefore now applied for a judicial review.”
A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “The transfer of Claremont House and Castle Grange has been through a long process of evaluation, engagement and public scrutiny.
“Throughout that time, the council has prioritised the quality of care for residents. The decision is now subject to legal proceedings and it would be inappropriate to comment further, or explore alternative options, until we know the outcome of that process.”
