James Brokenshire 146x219James Brokenshire has become the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government after Sajid Javid’s appointment as Home Secretary.

Javid moved to the Home Office after the resignation of Amber Rudd in the aftermath of the Windrush affair and whether there were targets in the Department for net removals of migrants.

Brokenshire, MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup and a lawyer at a City law firm prior to being elected, said on Twitter that he was honoured by the appointment and was “looking forward to taking the Government’s agenda forward especially on building the homes our country needs”.

The MP, seen as an ally of the Prime Minister, stood down as Northern Ireland Secretary in January this year for surgery after he had received a diagnosis of lung cancer.

Rudd’s role as Minister for Women and Equalities has been handed to International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt.
