Families refusing access to support

Luton Council has awarded Bevan Brittan a legal services contract worth an estimated £500,000 which will see the law firm assist a new executive advisory group called the Luton Shareholder Group (LSG).

The contract award notice, published yesterday (31 May), notes that the law firm will advise LSG on company law, commercial agreements and any other related legal matters.

The LSG was set up by the local authority earlier this year to provide advisory, non-decision making oversight of the council's commercial companies and joint ventures. It is also responsible for advising and making recommendations to the council's executive branch on the way in which it conducts itself as a shareholder and how to vote on governance matters concerning the council's companies.

The group is made up of six elected members, including the Executive Leader, Deputy Executive Leader, the Executive Member with portfolio responsibility for Finance, and three other councillors.

The contract will run for five years, from today (1 June) until 31 May 2027.
